Colour on your digital device reaches your eyes by transmitted light. The colour you see from printed material is the result of reflected light. You would be able to see vibrant colour in a darkened room thanks to transmitted light from your device, whereas from the print, you might see nothing at all.

Because of the difference between transmitted and reflected light, colours cannot be directly compared. While close colour matching is possible, sometimes alternative colours will be preferred. On a digital device, image resolution of 72 pixels per inch (72 ppi) looks sharp. That’s because the pixels that light up the screen conform to this per-inch density. Images comprising more pixels—e.g. 300 ppi or 600 ppi—will look no sharper on your device’s screen. However, for reliable sharpness when printed, 300 ppi is the accepted minimum resolution. Transferring 72 pixels per inch to the print world becomes 72 dpi (dots per inch). This would print sharply only at reduced sizes—actual size would look grainy, whereas 300 dpi has enough dots for the image to appear sharp to the naked eye.
